Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
