New research suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
