European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
